About Us

Welcome to Jozi Cats!

We became Africa’s first gay and inclusive competitive rugby club in 2015 where anyone regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression can enjoy the game of rugby in a safe space whether as a player, official or spectator.

Jozi Cats caters for experienced players and adult beginners in both touch and contact rugby, as well as representing South Africa in international gay inclusive rugby as the only club in Africa that belongs to the IGR, the global organisation for gay and inclusive rugby.

Our sights are set firmly on growing gay and inclusive rugby within Jozi Cats Rugby Club and the rest of the country, while ensuring we remain a safe and harassment-free environment for everyone who shares the values.

Jozi Cats is a people organisation first, a sports association second and a community change-maker third working in local, rugby, LGBTI* and member communities using the language of rugby for engagement. We practice at Sandton Sports Club, every Thursday night from 18:00 – 20:30

Jozi Cats is an NPO (NPO 169-144) and will soon have its Section 18A status meaning all sponsorships will be tax-deductible.

Our Values

Inclusivity and diversity in sport and equality for all

Community Initiatives

Jozi Cats sits at the unique intersect of four communities: The Rugby community, LGBTIQ+ community, our member community and local geographic communities. Over the last 5 years we have engaged in many communities across these communities.

A few highlights being:

  • Co-hosting the First Inclusive Tag Rugby Tournament in Africa on Human Rights day (21 March) with endorsement from Network of African National Human Rights Institutions, South African Human Rights Commission, Tag Rugby South Africa and SARU,
  • Co-hosted Tag Rugby Get Ahead Sports Programme for 350 learners from disadvantaged communities
  • Created the Pathway Programme to welcome and educate all new Jozi Cats on what it means to be a Jozi Cat both on and off the field to ensure our members play their part to ensuring our inclusive rugby club remains a safe, welcoming and harassment free environment for our members and supporters alike.
  • We are in the process of exploring the possibility of a player development fund, to identify and nurture and provide more access for promising talent from disadvantaged communities

Team Captain

I was born and raised in Johannesburg and have always enjoyed staying active and fit. When I joined the JoziCats, I quickly made some of my best friends to date and got hooked on touch rugby. JoziCats gave me the opportunity to play touch rugby for Gauteng, which was a great experience. Currently I enjoy playing my roll as captain of the touch rugby team.

Contact Rugby

Jozi Cats Contact Rugby is building a squad to compete in the IGR Bingham Cup in Ottawa, Canada in 2020. This is the premier event in the IGR calendar and includes IGR-affiliated club from all over the world and will be the first-time players from Africa compete in the tournament.

In early 2020, as part of the build-up to the Bingham Cup, we shall be hosting Adult beginner Pathway programmes for new members to learn, develop and sharpen their rugby skills to possibly be selected to represent our club and continent in The Bingham Cup.

We practice every Thursday at Sandton Sports Club from 18h00 – 20h30

Touch Team

Our “Touch Cats” compete in the In2Touch league at Sandton Sports Club every Tuesday night. We are building on and cater for competitive and social players, in order to cater for all skill and ability-levels, regardless of gender identity or expression.

Our head coach, Mandy Silverstone, is one of the most experienced Touch players in the country, representing the province and country consistently over the last 20 years. We are also very proud that some of our players represent the sport at Provincial level and contribute to the sport through its formal provincial structures.

We practice every Thursday at Sandton Sports Club from 18h00 – 20h30
